AdeleAdkins was born to a young single mother in several working-class communities of London. When she was a kid she was fond of singing pop songs of the day and was taught how to play the guitar and the clarinet. She was introduced to Etta the mid-century rhythm and blues singer in her teens and began to consider a career as a musician. She was enrolled in an academy for visual and performing arts that was funded by the government. One of her friends posted songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. After her graduation the music of Adkins caught the attention of record label. She was signed in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
